Childhood Skin Diseases

Acne

This autoimmune condition is characterized by bald patches mainly on scalp and may involve eyebrows, beard area or any other body part. Medical therapy is required if there is an increase in number of patches and no evidence of hair growth on its own.

Patchy hair loss can be localized or generalized. It can be scarring or non-scarring. It is very essential to identify type of hair loss at an early stage as the disease activity can be controlled to prevent further damage to hair follicles. Scarring alopecia is a condition with permanent damage to hair follicles and replacement by fibrous tissue. Treatment requires patience. Scalp biopsy is helpful in confirmation of diagnosis.
Hair loss in males and females
Multiple factors like genetic, old age, nutritional deficiency, stress, chronic medical or surgical illness etc. are associated. Female pattern hair loss is characterized by thinning or widening of gap between hair follicles which may lead to baldness if not treated early. Appropriate investigations are also required.
